Throughout your school's implementation of the Olweus Bullying Prevention
Program, you'll have access to resources, training and workshops to facilitate
success. Because the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program takes a systems
change approach with schoolwide implementation, training and resources are
available to:
- teachers
- substitute teachers
- counselors
- after-school program providers
- school resource officers
- support staff
- playground aides
- bus drivers
- cafeteria workers
- custodial staff
- parents
One-day Training for Teachers and Other Staff
You will be invited to attend a full-day training for teachers and staff (or two half-
day blocks) conducted by members of your school's Bullying Prevention
Coordinating Committee. In this training you will gain a better understanding of
bullying and the importance of taking a systems-change approach to the
problem. Then, teachers will learn how to implement classroom components
of the program, including how to work with parents effectively.
Most schools administer the Olweus Bullying Questionnaire prior to schoolwide
training. Bullying Prevention Coordinating Committee members will use the
results of this survey to pinpoint site-specific bullying problems where you may
need to focus more attention and student supervision.
For successful schoolwide implementation, every adult needs to be empowered to
stop bullying wherever it occurs: on the bus, in the lunch line, on the playground,
in the classroom, or wherever students gather. Whatever your role in the school, by
the end of the training you will have the knowledge and resources needed to
successfully intervene to stop bullying behaviors.
The Bullying Prevention Coordinating Committee
In addition to staff and teacher training, your school's Bullying Prevention
Coordinating Committee will be your number one resource. Bullying Prevention
Coordinating Committee members receive more extensive training in the
program and maintain contact with a certified Olweus trainer who can answer
questions and provide guidance throughout the first year of the program.
Staff Discussion Groups
Periodically, your school may hold staff discussion groups. These mini-workshops
will give you a chance to increase your skills and talk with other teachers and staff
members about the successes and challenges you've had with implementing the
Olweus Bullying Prevention Program.
Become a Certified Olweus Trainer
Consider becoming a certified trainer for the program. Highly qualified educators
who complete the Training of Trainers (TOT) program will be ready to provide
training and consultation to their school's Bullying Prevention Coordinating
Committee. Certified Olweus trainers may provide training and consultation
services to other schools. Learn more.
